The limitations of extension agents, radios and community information centres in delivery of agro-marketing information to farmers in Budaka district for agribusiness development were assessed. The overall objective of this research was to identify gaps in the existing system of collection as well as dissemination of market information. Study respondents included farmers, extension staff and radio station managers. The findings indicated that despite the presence of extension staff, radios and a community information centre in Budaka District, farmers did not effectively access agro-marketing information. There were challenges in availing timely and up-to-date market information to farmers to enable them sell their agro-produce at competitive prices. Lack of an effective market information collection system, inadequate market information management skills, limited financing of radio programs all contributed negatively to an effective and efficient agro-marketing system in the District. Future research is needed to improve agro-marketing information in order to improve agribusiness in the district. This research may be used as a case study for other districts in Uganda.
Cognitive radio has been found to be the technology to satisfy the huge demand for applications of high data rates that increase the number of users in wireless networks. Cognitive radio is a very interdisciplinary topic as it includes dynamic spectrum access and policies, flexible system architectures, learning, context awareness and cooperative networking. However, most of the current cognitive radio work targets spectrum sensing and spectrum allocation without considering the impact of optimization on the performance of the network. Mitola's vision intended to build context-sensitive smart radios that are able to adapt to the wireless environment conditions while maintaining quality of service support for different applications. In this book, we study cognitive radio from a system point of view focusing closely on architectures, techniques and algorithms that can enable intelligent operations for spectrum allocation and radio reconfiguration optimization. A modular cognitive resource management framework is investigated, which facilitate a development of flexible control and optimization techniques for resources management in wireless networks on diverse radio environments.
The evolution of modern technologies started over 100 years ago. Many means of technologies were emerged. The telegraph, for instance, was the first means of technology. With the development of the science, other means were emerged such as, telephones, radios, television, early desktop computers. In the early 1980s, the personal computer was developed. The emergence of Internet in particular today (World Wide Web) has resulted in a computer that is used for more than computing device but also for communication, media creation, learning, and so much more. For a long time, schools have used traditional tools as part of instruction and learning such as blackboard, books, pencils,...to name but a few. Nowadays, modern classrooms contain text books, televisions and videocassettes player and computers and many secondary schools have classrooms that contain equipment used in commercial and manufacturing settings. All of these tools could be considered broadly as part of 'educational technology". Educational technology, thus, is any means that are used to support teaching and learning (Mathematica Policy Research,2003:3). Therefore, bringing media into the classroom is of great importance.
Radio, as a medium of communication plays a vital role in assisting social development in countries like Ethiopia.More recently, private FM radios are mushrooming in most Ethiopian cities. However, the role of these private FM radios in development has not been researched and mapped. Moreover,they are receiving little attention in discussions in communication for development. Therefore, the author studied the contributions of these private FM radio stations to social development, and analyzed their actual impacts on people s access to and dissemination of information in the country.
How can a community re-create itself after a civilwar? In El Salvador, returning refugees from thedevastated northern regions established localcommunity radio stations to inform, entertain andbuild a new cultural identity. Based on a year ofethnographic research, Naming the Future argues thatthese new community radios worked to activate avision of civil society, and fought to create localpublic spaces which could also help them enter thenational public sphere. They melded popular culturewith mass media through their partipatory programs.This popular culture helped their communities to workthrough their shared histories and experiences of thewar, the horrors and repression which it brought, andtheir dreams and efforts to attain them. It was alsoa way that they combined local traditions withglobalized music and other cultural flows whichincreasingly were part of their lives. For communication scholars, development workers andstudents alike, this in-depth study of radiohighlights the distinctive contribution ofparticipatory media forms to the development of civilsociety and the re-creation of local culture despitecivil war and intensifying globalization.
